This element of the project: Retrofit Kit Rails seeks to examine the use of rails in assessable spaces. This rail and lighting system imagines an adaptive approach to accessibility within existing housing. A small selection of aluminum arcs and wooden dowels afford artfully designed sustainable modular ambulatory support throughout anyone’s home, along with lighting to support you, your coat, hang a mirror, hold your keys and light your way. With a focus on recyclable and renewable materials, retrofit kit rails hopes to support the environment as much as it hopes to support others.
Along side the approval of the Chief Disability Discrimination Officer Dr Ben Gauntlett, the impact of this design hopes to create a less stigmatized solution to accessibility. By providing the opportunity to combine a design of accessibility with a potential point of aesthetic interest. This is so an individual can use their need to support as an opportunity to express their personality through their own unique creation that bares a minimal environmental impact. By shifting the narrative of home railing solutions, we hope to help discover new solutions.
